The little Jimbaran Travel Guide

Jimbaran and the Bukit - Traditional charm and great surf spots

Jimbaran and the Bukit, located in the most south-western part of Bali, in the neighborhood of Nusa Dua, are also developing very quickly. The property prices are still affordable compared to other areas (about 350 USD/m2).

As with Nusa Dua, this area can be recommended to nearly everybody, apart from party people. While Nusa Dua stands for pure luxury, Jimbaran offers a nice selection of Accommodation from every price category. Especially in the Bukit, there is still Accommodation for 10 USD a day available which is highly appreciated by most surfers. Along Uluwatu Street (Jalan Uluwatu), the way to Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu), two, three and four star accommodation can be found. The 5 star Hotels and Resorts are mostly located around Jimbaran Bay and New Kuta Beach, formerly known as Dreamland.

Bukit - New Kuta Beach

If we can believe professional surfers, Jimbaran has the hottest Beach spots in Bali (Pecatu Area). One of them is called Impossibles Beach. This area is recommended to professional surfers only. Newcomers should not even think about messing with this force of nature.

As already mentioned, Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu), one of Bali’s six most important temples, is probably the biggest attraction in this area. However, Jimbaran also offers a culinary highlight, which can be done every day if you are a seafood lover. The sunset dinner in Jimbaran, is another clear highlight and a must do when you are in Bali, even if you are not staying in Jimbaran. Around 25-30 Warungs (local Restaurants), located to the left and right of the Intercontinental Beach Resort, offering fresh fish for a very reasonable price. 1.5 kilos of Red Snapper, surved with rice, water spinach and outstanding sauces, also including a fruit dessert, comes up to about 15 USD. Additionally you get a great sunset and a table directly on the ocean, totally for free. This culinary highlight is clearly value for money.

Jimbaran and Nusa Dua, both offer great Wedding opportunities. Wedding chapels situated directly on the cliff make Jimbaran and Nusa Dua Weddings an unforgettable experience. Extraordinary wedding chapels, combined with stunning views and perfect organization guarantee an unforgettable Wedding in the south of Bali – For every Guest!

In Jimbaran, you can still experience the Balinese charm as it is not overdeveloped yet. Accommodation in every price range is also available. Surfers and high end clients meet in Jimbaran Bay for sunset dinners. Unfortunately high end shopping is not available but Nusa Dua is not far. In case you don’t have the Dollars for Nusa Dua and you are looking for a place away from Bali’s heavy nightlife, Jimbaran is the place to stay for you.

10 tips - Things to do in Jimbaran

What to do in Bali – What to do in Jimbaran
Tip 1 - Hire a scooter or motorbike

The Traffic on Jalan Uluwatu in Jimbaran can be heavy from time to time but generally speaking, it also allows beginners the chance to hire a scooter and have a drive around. Do it once and explore Bali’s southern most area, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua, with their wonderful beaches on the bike (Rent about 5 USD a day).

Tip 2 - Enjoy a romantic seafood dinner at Jimbaran Bay

Eat seafood at Jimbaran Bay at least once! For commission reasons, drivers in Bali will probably want to force you to go somewhere else (prices can be three times more expensive there). Refuse that and get them to take you to the Warungs (local restaurants) between the Intercontinental Resort Jimbaran and the Four Season Resort Jimbaran. One of the most popular Warungs is called Nyoman’s Café. In case Nyomans Café is not available at the place you have been taken to, you should complain. Obviously, if you feel comfortable, hiring a bike is highly recommended and you should go there on your own.

Tip 3 - Go to Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu)

Jimbaran’s Number 1 sightseeing place is Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) as it belongs to Bali’s six major temples. In case you feel comfortable, don’t use a taxi or a driver to go there. Use a scooter or a motorbike. It is fun and a real adventure. For those who don’t feel comfortable, obviously a half day tour can be booked.

Tip 4 - See Jimbaran traditional Fish Market

Jimbaran still has a fisherman’s village charm. Obviously with a fisherman’s village belongs a fish market. Go to see the fish market at least once. Ask the hotel staff when the best time to go is so you can see the ‘new arrivals’ and the hustle and bustle at the market. Warning: It can be a little smelly and the standard of hygiene is probably a little different to what you are expecting. Use the bike and avoid tours or taxis.

Tip 5 - Watch professional Surfers

Jimbaran has some very nice beaches offering the best surfing opportunities in Bali . Hire a bike and follow Jalan Uluwatu to the south. You don’t even need a map and you will be automatically guided to the right spots by the road. In case the impossible happens and you really do get lost, you will sooner or later meet some surfers who will help you to find the best beaches.

Tip 6 - Shop in local Family Stores

Go shopping! Apart from Benoa Square, Jimbaran does not have any real big shopping opportunities. However, this is no big deal as in the neighborhood, Nusa Dua offers Bali collection, a place with plenty of shops for shopping at the higher end of the scale. Jimbaran offers lot of tiny shops and family businesses offering cheap prices. Take the bike, drive on Jalan Uluwatu up to the north and you will find some small shops offering scarves, sunglasses, clothes and much more. Don’t negotiate if the price is shown.

Tip 7 - Enjoy togetherness at Bali’s most hidden beach

Drive to Nusa Dua where you can still explore hidden treasures in the form of secret beaches. To figure out the exact locations you should ask the hotel staff. Tip: Ask for the Umbrella Beach (Pantai Gunung Payung)! Use the bike to get there and don’t forget to bring your towel, food and drinks. Under regular circumstances, Umbrella Beach stands for togetherness but you should be aware of the fact that there are a lot of stairs down the cliff that have to be managed until you can enjoy this wonderful and secret beach.

BTDC has a sophisticated shopping area which includes Bali collection, a store offering everything from clothes to western food. Tip 9 - Enjoy Water Sports at Tanjung Benoa

Tanjung Benoa also belongs to the Nusa Dua area, the best known area for water sports in Bali. It is worth spending a full day in Tanjung Benoa. Start the day with activities on the ocean such as fly fishing, banana boating, jet skiing and/or parasailing. Spa after your lunch and later on enjoy some afternoon cocktails in one of the beach clubs situated in Tanjung Benoa. Finally complete your day with a nice dinner in one of Tanjung Benoa’s seafood restaurants. In case you want to go there by bike, you can avoid the main road by going through Jimbaran Hills, a very nice bike tour!

Enjoy sunset cocktails at one of these two locations as they are situated directly on the cliff with stunning sunset views. Both of them are located in the Bukit, not far from each other. The way to El Kabron is very exciting as you have to drive down a very steep hill. Make sure your brakes work well before you set off! Both, El Kabron and Klapa are classified as Beach Bars and offer you the possibility to jump in their pool as well. Don’t forget to bring your shorts and/or swimming suit!!!
